Our Story

The Town Project originally formed in 2019 as the result of Dr. Sherry’s increasing concerns around gentrification and the housing crisis in Oakland, CA. Having moved to the Bay Area from San Diego in the 1990s, she had witnessed deepening disparities for decades—particularly in Black and Brown communities—worsening with the COVID-19 pandemic. To address these concerns through a justice- and community-centered lens, Dr. Sherry founded The Town Project.

Life took an unexpected turn when she stepped into a leadership role as the School Services Director at SEEDS Conflict Resolution Center in Berkeley, CA. In that position, she was finally able to combine her background in educational research, curriculum design, and teaching to support public and private schools, school districts, and institutions of higher learning in implementing restorative justice practices and transformative conflict mediation.

When SEEDS phased out its School Services division in June of 2023, Dr. Sherry and many of the practitioners she worked with felt a deep responsibility to continue the work they had built in schools and communities. The Town Project was reborn—this time with a sharper focus on equity, a trauma-informed approach, and a bold commitment to interrupting systemic harm.

While our initial relaunch focused on supporting educational institutions, The Town Project has since expanded its reach. We now offer restorative justice training, conflict mediation services, and community-based programming for nonprofits, workplaces, public agencies, youth programs, and individuals. Our work continues to center racial and economic justice, but with a wider lens—supporting healing, transformation, and equity wherever harm or disconnection exists.
